Outdoor sports lighting is intended to offer athletic fields—such as football fields, soccer fields, baseball fields, and tennis courts—enough light to support sporting activities throughout the twilight and evening hours. There is an extensive selection of styles, wattages, and optical qualities available for luminaires used in sports lighting applications. In order to offer an efficient lighting system, the design selection process includes consideration for luminaire optical performance in addition to appropriate mounting heights and positions. Lighting equipment is categorized especially for indoor or outdoor use due to the different obstacles that come with indoor and outdoor use. One specific beginning fundamental problem is visibility. There are a number of other factors that need to be taken into account when designing a lighting system, such as achieving a certain level of illumination, distributing light evenly throughout the playing area, glare, cost of installations, lamp lifecycle costs, luminaire efficiencies, beam patterns of the delivered illumination, human perception of opposing players, revealing the spin of a ball and its path of travel, glare, and many other lighting-related issues. Metal halide, fluorescent, and light-emitting diodes (LED) are common light sources for sports lighting systems. LED lighting fixtures provide excellent color reproduction and a high lumen maintenance factor. Since LEDs have so many benefits, there may be a chance in the future for better sports lighting systems. Excellent optical efficiency, little sensitivity to operating position, instantaneous on/off, full range dimming, a greater range of color temperatures, and enhanced optical control are some of these advantages. Compared to conventional high-wattage metal halide lighting systems, the enhanced optical control made available by LEDs gives lighting designers the ability to more precisely regulate the light beam, thereby reducing off-site spill and glare.
